By the time six o’clock rolled around, I nervously ran my hands down my pants and glanced around the dining room table one last time.

The fettucine noodles seemed to have cooked nicely.

The alfredo sauce was mostly lump-free.

The chicken was my biggest concern. How did you know when chicken had cooked long enough? I didn’t want to overcook it and have it turn out dry. It looked okay. Didn’t it? I peered suspiciously at the chicken.

At least the garlic bread had been easy and smelled magnificent.

Dessert was definitely the best and I was excited to get to that part.

“Smells good,” Van announced as he walked in behind me and took me in his arms. “Mmmm, the food too,” he growled against my ear.

“Okay, let’s eat before it gets cold,” I suggested and we sat down.

We took turns dishing up the creamy pasta and chicken before choosing two pieces of garlic bread each.

My first bite had me frowning, making a sound of disgust, and spitting the whole thing into my napkin.

Van watched me with curiosity as he chewed for a second, but then his eyes grew wide and he too spat his food into his napkin. “So, the chicken may be a bit undercooked,” he said with a soft, caring smile.

I grimaced. “A bit? It was almost still cold in the middle. I will never be able to forget the feeling of raw chicken between my teeth.” I fought back a gag. “Oh God, I may barf.”

“Hey, no harm, no foul,” Van assured.

“Riiiight,” I drawled. “Nothing like trying to give your boyfriend salmonella.”

Van’s brows shot up and I froze.

“Say that again,” he ordered.

“Salmonella,” I whispered.

“The other.”

“Boyfriend?” I swallowed thickly. “Sorry, it just slipped out.”

“Is that something you’d want? To be my boyfriend?”

“I mean, it fits. With the exception of faking it for Trent and that lady and her son—and not letting Charlie in on how close we’ve become—we treat each other like boyfriends. But I can see if you wouldn’t want to be that serious with anyone you hadn’t even done anything sexual with,” I rambled.

Van stood and pulled me from my chair. “Shut up,” he commanded and placed a bruising kiss against my lips. When we broke apart, breathless, he smiled. “There’s no way sex with us won’t be amazing. Just making out with you is crazy good. I’m down for being your boyfriend.”

I frowned. “Do we tell Charlie?”

“Let’s get through camping and the local business event, then we’ll see where we stand and figure out the best way to tell him.” Van tipped my chin up and brushed a kiss on my mouth. “Does that sound okay?”

I nodded, pretty sure I would have agreed to anything at that point because my head and heart were jumbled with all things Van. “Kendall said not to worry about Charlie and she’d take care of him.”

“Perfect.” Van glanced at the table. “My first thought was to just pick the chicken out, but raw chicken mixed with sauce and noodles is likely not safe. So, do we want to order-in or just skip straight to dessert?”

My stomach growled.
